DUTIES:  Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in connection with the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of water, waste, sewage and drainage pipes, plumbing fixtures and accessories.

 

REQUIREMENTS:  The following requirements must be met by March 21, 2010:

1.      Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in plumbing work, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.  Possession of a valid State of Illinois or City of Chicago Plumber’s license.

2.      Domiciled within the boundaries of the District within six months of successful completion of probation. (The District is in Cook County, Illinois, covering approximately 90% of the county area.)

 

SALARY: The current pay rate is $44.00 per hour.

 

THE EXAMINATION will consist of a written test weighted 40% and a performance test weighted 60%. The minimum passing score on each test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to be eligible to compete in each subsequent test and to have their names placed on the eligible list. The written test will assess candidates’ knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as the principles and practices of the plumbing trade including tools, fittings, fixtures, venting systems and equipment; reading and interpreting blueprints and sketches; plumbing code; shop math; safety principles and practices; and drainage and water distribution systems and materials.  The performance test will measure a candidates’ skills in performing plumbing tasks.

 

APPLICATION AND EXAMINATION PROCESS:

1.      Applications may be obtained from the Employment Service Office of the District by phoning (312) 751-5100 or by visiting the District’s web site at www.mwrd.org. The filing period for this examination will be from Friday, February 5, 2010 through Friday, February 19, 2010.  Note:  District offices will be closed on Friday, February 12, 2010 in observance of Lincoln’s Birthday and Monday, February 15, 2010 in observance of Presidents’ Day.  Completed applications must be filed by one of the following methods:

   a.   Delivered to the Employment Service Office, weekdays from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from February 5, 2010 through February 19, 2010.

      b.   Sent by mail to the Employment Service Office, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, First Floor, 100 East Erie Street, Chicago, IL 60611.  Applications sent by mail must bear a postmark no earlier than February 5, 2010 and no later than February 19, 2010.

  1. Submitted online through the District’s Online Employment Center at www.mwrd.org from February 5, 2010 through February 19, 2010.  Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time on February 19, 2010.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the application form is completed and submitted in a timely manner by one of the methods described above.  Descriptions and dates of education and/or experience should be very clear so that it is understood exactly how the applicant meets the minimum requirements.

2.      All applicants will be advised in writing if they have been admitted to the examination process.  Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by March 19, 2010 should contact the Employment Service Office at (312) 751-5100.  The written test will be administered on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Northside College Preparatory High School, 5501 N. Kedzie, Chicago, IL.  Candidates should report at 9:00 a.m. with the approved admission letter and a driver’s license or other form of photo identification.  Candidates may bring a quiet, cordless calculator for use during the test.  No books, study guides, cell phones, PDAs, laptops or other aids will be allowed.

3.      The performance test is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 8, 2010 and other dates that may be necessary to accommodate the number of candidates.  Candidates who pass the written test will be informed in writing regarding the date, time and place of the performance test.

 

VERIFICATION OF QUALIFICATIONS:  Prospective employees will be required to provide documentation of the required education and/or experience upon employment.

 

APPOINTMENTS will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified), and C (Qualified).  Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years.  New employees will be required to pass a physical examination which will include a drug test and an evaluation of the candidate’s ability to meet the specific physical demands of the job.
